Doshas-Part 2 : What is your dosha type or prakriti?

Though you can get a good idea of your prakriti yourself, it is best to let a trained Ayurvedic doctor to determine it precisely.

Before knowing Prakriti, understand Vikriti

Prakriti is how your body is made from birth, like your natural design.
Vikriti is when your body is not in balance right now and needs help.

Analyze at your lifelong physical tendencies

Body frame and weight

  • Energy and stamina
    • Vata: Bursts of energy, then sudden fatigue, variable stamina.
    • Pitta: Strong, steady energy, good stamina, dislikes skipping meals.
    • Kapha: Slow to start but good long‑term endurance, can work steadily for long hours.
  • Skin and hair
    • Vata: Dry, rough, thin skin and hair, chaps easily, early wrinkles.
    • Pitta: Warm, often sensitive or reddish skin, can get acne/rashes; hair tends to thin or grey earlier.
    • Kapha: Thick, smooth, often pale or cool skin; thick, oily, abundant hair.
  • Appetite and digestion
    • Vata: Irregular appetite and digestion; sometimes ravenous, sometimes no hunger; gas and bloating common.
    • Pitta: Strong, sharp hunger; becomes irritable if meals are delayed; prone to acidity or loose stools.
    • Kapha: Slow digestion; can skip meals easily; feels heavy after eating; tendency to weight gain.

Analyze your mental and emotional patterns

Thinking

  • Emotions
    • Vata: Anxiety, worry, fear when stressed; quickly enthusiastic, quickly discouraged.
    • Pitta: Irritability, anger, impatience when stressed; strong opinions and drive.
    • Kapha: Sadness, attachment, lethargy when stressed; generally calm, forgiving, loyal.
  • Work and habits
    • Vata: Starts many things, struggles to finish; irregular routines.
    • Pitta: Goal‑oriented, competitive, likes to lead; tends to overwork.
    • Kapha: Consistent, reliable, may procrastinate starting but then sticks with it.

Your mind‑pattern often confirms what your body pattern suggests.

Analyze whether you are single, dual, or tri‑dosha

Most people are dual‑type, like Vata‑Pitta or Pitta‑Kapha.

  • Single‑dominant: One dosha is clearly strongest in almost every feature (rare).
  • Dual‑dominant: Two doshas appear again and again; you see yourself clearly in both (most common).
    • Example: Thin, quick, anxious but also sharp, driven, easily irritated → Vata‑Pitta.
  • Tri‑dosha: You strongly recognise yourself in all three, with none clearly dominating (uncommon).

Self‑tests are helpful for awareness, but they have limits. A practitioner adds:

  • Pulse examination, tongue, eyes, skin, nail assessment.
  • Detailed discussion of your childhood history, family pattern, past illnesses, menses (for women), sleep, mental state, and environment.
  • Differentiation between deep prakriti and surface vikriti so that diet, herbs, and therapies are not chosen wrongly.

At Bahdrrasri Ayurveda , we choose the treatment by first checking which dosha is out of balance.
The goal is not just to remove symptoms, but to calm that dosha using the right food, herbs, routine, and therapies.
Each person gets a personalized plan to bring their body back into natural balance.
